Singapore has one of the highest rates of myopia, and eyesight problems are rampant amongst the population here. From contact lenses to spectacles and sunglasses with a prescription, most of us are reliant on a little something to make us see better. This often creates a perception that by wearing the aforementioned, we’re doing all we can for our precious eyes, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, to take care of our little vision babies, there’s so much more we can and should do.
Watch What You Eat
That’s right; what you eat affects your eyes and eyesight, and therefore it’s important to keep to a nutritious diet. Omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and vitamins C and E can help in warding off age-related vision problems. These include (but are not limited to) macular degeneration and cataracts.
To take care of your future self, try to fill your plate with:
• Green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale)
• Oily fish (salmon, tuna)
• Non-meat protein sources (eggs, nuts, beans)
• Citrus fruits and juices (oranges, lime)
• Oysters and pork.
Not only do these food items feed you the necessary nutrition, but they also provide with you a well-balanced diet, lowering your chances of obesity and type-2 diabetes, which is the leading cause of blindness in adults.
Control Your Screen Time
Goodness, I struggle with this so much. From doing work on my desktop computer to reading on my tablet and entertaining myself on my phone, it’s almost frustrating how dependent on I am on my devices to get anything done. I’ve started to take consistent breaks after every 20 minutes to close my eyes for a few seconds: extended screen usage can cause anything from an eye strain or blurry vision to causing dry eyes or making it difficult to focus from a distance. It’s also recommended to take a 15-minute break after every 2 hours.
Invest in a Good Pair of Sunglasses
Sunnies can be expensive, but they’re worth it. The right pair of sunglasses will protect your eyes from UV rays. Ask an expert and look for pairs that block 99% to 100% of UVA and UVB rays. Too much UV exposure boosts your chances of cataracts and macular degeneration. If you only wear glasses — and therefore stay away from sunglasses — buy a pair of sunglasses with a prescription. It might seem redundant to carry one around, but Singapore is a very, very sunny island. More often than not, you’ll need these shades. On top of that, although contact lenses may offer some UV protection, it’s almost always never bad to have a little extra protection from sunglasses.
It’s easy to take our eyes for granted, especially with how often and how much we use them. Like any other part of your body, eyes, too, will get tired when you use them too much. So remember to take little steps in taking care of them! It’s a lot easier than it sounds and the results are greater than you would imagine. When it comes to your eyes, a little does go a long way.
